Special Services

As the centre of the town’s Christian life, St Edburg’s is often the venue for baptisms, weddings, and funerals.

Baptism is the first step in a child or adult’s life with Christ. When christened as a child, a baby’s parents promise to guide their son or daughter in the ways of the Church, with the help of family, god parents and friends. You can learn more about the service and meaning of baptism here.

The next stage of the journey with Christ is Confirmation. Though there is no strict age when this can happen, people often feel ready for the commitment of a life with God only in their mid to late teens. Of course, anyone older is welcome to join the family of Christ as a fully confirmed Christian too! Confirmation is a celebration with both your family and the whole church, and happens after a period of classes run by the team of clergy at St Edburgs in preparation for the service. Find out more here.

Weddings are joyous occasions when a man and a woman come together to celebrate their love and to unite themselves for life in Christ. A moment for both family, friends and the community to share in their love, a wedding is a chance to commit to someone for life in the presence of God and according to his wishes. You can learn more about weddings at St Edburg’s and their meaning here.

At the end of our lives, the church is once more the place where people come to commemorate someone into the loving arms of God and to give thanks for their time on earth. Funerals are times for both mourning and celebration, and faith provides the comfort of knowing that Christ died so that we may be given eternal life.
